Poland's technical death metal band's 2nd release is out. Maciek sent this to me, too! (Thanx to him again!). This album contains 2 intros + 7 tracks lasting 40 min. Recording quality is high and music is powerful and technical. Sometimes scream vox, sometimes clean and brutal vox. The Music is very various. The songs are killer, guitar riffs and drummers' performance is killer. Their label makes a good promotion for the band and scheduled a tour in Poland. For 10 $ from the management address.

DISAGREEMENT - 9/10
Poland may not be the Mecca of the death metal industry, but at least since Vader have seen the light of day, everybody knows that Poland has more to offer than just mediocre popes. NOMAD have been founded in 1994, and after one demo tape and a full length album, 'The Devilish Whirl' is their first CD on NVM. The first thing that struck my eyes was the very artistic 20-page booklet. Compared to most established bands, NOMAD even offer visually more than other death metal bands. It's no wonder after having taken a look at the professional packaging, that the production is also totally overwhelming, and to my own shame I have to admit that I have not expected such a great sounding album from a small independent label. What about the songwriting now? Two of the nine songs are intros, so that there are only seven real songs left, but I can say without hesitation that every death metal fan will love the intensity of the songs, especially since Bleyzabel's vocals are really extremely insane and from time to time introduce black metal elements into the songs. Still NOMAD are rather a death metal band, and I might say even one very good death metal band with a clear intent to find a sound for themselves. People who think that death metal has been a dead end street for far too long should give NOMAD a chance, because 'The Devilish Whirl' is one good way to escape the monotony of most current death metal releases. back >>

I was expecting black metal from this band and I get melodic death metal. Actually this could almost be black metal if you threw in some Bolt Thrower, a few Carcass-like riffs, some amazing time changes that actually sound like they belong in the song, some old metal and a cool vocalist who sounds almost constipated, but an evil constipated. Hey, don't ask me. All I know is that it works. HELLFROST.COM - 98/100
The Polish death metal label NOVUM VOX MORTIS has yet to let me down and this album by NOMAD is no exception. Grinding, brutal, but atmospheric and very emotional death metal. Aggressive, pounding guitars and bile-spewing growls are the most prominent things you'll notice about this band as soon as the CD Devilish Whirl starts to play, despite the harmonic solos, surreal riffing and occasional black metal influences within. NOMAD fall into that rare category of "atmospheric brutal death metal" - the kind where "atmosphere" isn't used as a simple contrast(or prop) for heaviness but instead collides with the aggression outright. "Groping the Secret Corpses" flows with a simple, galloping(but grinding) riff while harmonic basslines/solos set the stage for NOMAD's insanely guttural, ultra-violent vocal attack. The Devilish Whirl bridges extreme death metal and traditional heavy metal in a way not often heard, and perhaps was last heard on Amorphis' 1992 album 'The Karelian Isthmus'. Obscure lyrics and devastating cover art round out this supreme death metal album. back >>

It seems as though there's a lot of wicked material coming from the ungodly wastelands of Poland, such is the case with the debut death metal release from NOMAD available through NOVUM VOX MORTIS. "The Devilish Whirl" features some very killer cover art that is backed up with some very impressive music from Hell. Included on this debut is 8 tracks of fairly brutal death metal plus a rather interesting intro to lead us into this disc. Undoubtedly one of the best songs of this recording is "War in the Name of - Impale" as this shows off just how brutal this band can be when they want to. Since NVM is a rather obscure indie, you might also want to check out their other releases when you're ordering a copy of the NOMAD CD such as: DAMNABLE/INCARNATED split disc, "Disco's Out, Slaughter Is In" 4-way split CD featuring the likes of LOST SOUL, REINLESS, DISINTER (gods!) & NIGHT GALLERY. Also be on the lookout for the upcoming release from LOST SOUL & their disc, "Scream of the Mourning Star" release as this will contain fairly brutal death metal which is supposedly in the same vein as MORBID ANGEL. back >>

This album already impresses for its beautiful layer, composed of a digital illustration full of symbolic elements. The music of NOMAD is a brutal, technical and visceral death metal, that possesses a certain melodic base. The guitarists' couple is phenomenal and the drummer is a technique machine gun! The vocalist Bleyzabel is a well of fury and insanity, while the bass of Herman has strong presence in all the music. The mix and production of the album are phenomenal, allowing with that listen each detail of the explosive music of the band. Finally, a mature and powerful work that should please all the lovers of the death metal.

Unique aggressive death metal w/death black metal vocal style. The music is odd, inventive and different. This Polish quintet's music is restless. Patrick and Drath create an unholy atmosphere with their dual axe attack. These guys are actually impressive. They are not stagnant in their music at all. Pienal kicks ass on the drums but for some reason the drums seem hidden in the background, making his playing sound weak at moments. This takes very little away from the great quality of this album. There are nine primitive tracks in this album. Their lyrics are full of blasphemy, seems like they were having fun with this one.

Normally I don't like any Black Metal, but NOMAD are one of the few bands who create a mixture of Black and Death Metal which is so good that even I like it. As usual I find the typical Black Metal vocal parts annoying, but luckily they're not too high... The music rules, very varied and played well. Hopefully many fans will recognize NOMAD and don't ignore them only because they mix two styles. Songs like "I - An Alchemist Of My Analysis" are much too good to ignore them! The production is very good and powerful. The guitars are far away from typical Black Metal guitars. The booklet is also very interesting, it's layout is very different to all the other booklets and makes this CD a little bit more interesting. It's a duty for all Death and Black Metal fans to check this CD out, NOMAD should make it to attract fans of both scenes.

As I've mentioned before, combining Death and Black Metal with Thrash isn't exactly a new idea, but NOMAD generally does it very well. There are moments where the multiple vocal styles are at odds with one another, or are simply terrible, such as towards the end of "A Constructive Image." But for the most part, this is an impressive release, made more so by the places where the band seamlessly integrates very mellow passages into their otherwise aggressive sound.
